Utah Softball Drops Heartbreaker To No. 22 Oregon State

LAS VEGAS, Nev.-Utah fell in its second game on Friday of the UNLV Softball Classic 9-5 to No. 22 Oregon State in extra innings. Utah drops to 4-2 overall, while the Beavers improve to 10-3. The Utes face No. 17 LSU and No. 13 DePaul on Saturday.

Utah scored in the first after Glennis Donnelly hit a monstrous home run just fair of the left field foul line with Jackie Wong, who had singled earlier in the inning, on base. Oregon State cut the lead in half (2-1) after a double by Vanessa Iapala scored Mia Longfellow.

In the fourth, Devina Quintero hit a round tripper of her own to extend Utah's lead to 3-1. The Utes added one more in the fifth after Donnelly's double down the left field line scored Texie Criddle.

With a 4-1 score, OSU posted three runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game. The first runs came off a two-run homer by Adrienne Alo. The next batter, Longfellow, would single, advance on a Ute error and try to score on an OSU single. But, Ute center fielder Texie Criddle had other things in mind as she gunned out Longfellow at the plate. With two on and two out, Utah would commit another error allowing the Beavers to tie the game at 4-4. Oregon State threatened again in the bottom of the sixth. After Alo doubled, she advanced to third on a Ute error and tried to score. Utah's Donnelly picked up the ball at second and threw a rifle to Kate Nygaard at the plate to get the out and leave the game tied at four apiece.

Jackie Wong was placed on second in the top of the eighth for the international tie-breaker rule. Wong moved to third after a sac bunt by Donnelly. She would then charge home and score on the squeeze play call played out perfectly by Melissa Stahnke. The run would leave Utah up 5-4 with one runner on. The next batter Nygaard would draw a walk, but Utah would leave the two stranded.

In the bottom of the eighth, OSU scored a run to tie the game at 5-5. Then with the bases loaded, one out and full count, the Beavers would hit a walk-off grand slam to win the game at 9-5.
