WACO, Texas – The University of Utah softball team suffered a 9-1 defeat to the Baylor Bears in Big 12 Conference action on Friday evening at Getterman Stadium in Waco, Texas.
This defeat drops the Utes to 29-16-1 overall and 5-10-1 in conference competition.
The Bears were quick to seize the early lead, using an error, a single through the middle and base hit to right to tally a run in the first inning. They tacked on another in the second, though Utah's
Danika Wilson ended the rally there by throwing out Baylor's Brooklyn Carter at the plate for the third out.
In the third, however, the home team went right back to work, pushing across three more runs that grew Utah's deficit to 5-0. The Utes found a way to dent home plate in the fourth, thanks to a
Payton Crank single, a wild pitch and an infield hit combined with an error that allowed Crank to touch home.
Unfortunately for Utah, that momentum was short-lived. Baylor regained their five-run edge thanks to an unearned run in their half of the fourth, then ended the night with a three-run fifth.
Crank was one of four Utes who collected hits, with Wilson,
Shonty Passi and
Reese Lee claiming the other three.
Mia Gomez and
Kennedy Proctor also reached base by drawing walks.
