TEMPE, Ariz. –
Mia Gomez and
Payton Crank both homered and
Kayla Lyon drove in three runs as the University of Utah softball team completed a sweep of the No. 21/22 Arizona State Sun Devils with an 11-6 triumph on Sunday afternoon in Big 12 Conference action at Farrington Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.
This goes down as Utah's first sweep of a ranked team on the road since they took three straight at No. 13 Oregon in 2023. It also pushes their win streak to 11 straight, matching another feat they accomplished in 2023. Utah is now 21-5 in 2026 and 3-0 in the Big 12.
The Utes seized the initiative immediately. Gomez lined the sixth pitch of the day over the wall in center for her second homer in as many days and Utah kept the pressure on with a walk and a hit batter that brought up Lyon. Utah's third baseman ripped a double into left that sent both baserunners across and, two batters later, Crank crushed a two-run dinger to center that finished off a five-run first inning.
Another rally was cobbled together by the visitors in the second, this one sparked by a
Hailee White lead-off single and a pair of free passes.
Danika Wilson brought in one run with a sacrifice fly, then Lyon split the gap in right-center and Gomez dented home plate to make the score 7-0.
ASU cut into the lead with runs in the second and third, but the Utes found an answer in the fourth. Wilson walked, Lyon singled and when Passi attempted advance both runners with a bunt, an ASU throwing error allowed Wilson to score. Crank collected her third RBI of the day with a hit to left and a White RBI single and Gomez sacrifice fly boosted the visitors' edge to 11-3.
After the home side crept to within 11-6,
Raci Miranda entered the game and settled the issue with two scoreless frames, earning her win No. 7. Miranda is the first Utah hurler to start a season 7-0 since Katie Donovan was 7-0 to begin the 2017 campaign. The game was ended after six innings when Utah's drop dead time was reached before the seventh inning had begun.
Utah's 35 runs across three games in Tempe represent their largest sum in a two or three-game set since they put up 36 runs against Southern Utah in May of 1996.
