The First Pitch: Things to Know
It's the final midweek game of the regular season for the Utah baseball team and it brings the Utes a short ride down to Provo for a matchup with the BYU Cougars. First pitch is at 6 p.m. MT inside Miller Park.
- Though Utah and BYU are now together once again in the Big 12, Tuesday's game will be a non-conference matchup and does not count toward the league standings. It's a fairly common occurrence in college baseball out West; Utah and BYU periodically had a similar setup when together in the Mountain West Conference.
- The Utes took two of three from the Cougars in the three-game league series in April at Smith's Ballpark. Utah bounced back from a tough series-opening loss with a 6-4 victory in the middle game, then took the rubber match 9-6 with a complete team effort at the plate, defensively and on the mound.
- The combined series attendance of 6,460 was the most for a Utah-BYU conference series since 2002 (in Provo) and the highest inside Smith's Ballpark since a WAC weekend between the clubs in 1997.
- Utah is coming off of a road series win over an Arizona team that was included in all five major polls and listed as high as No. 18 in the Perfect Game rankings. Austen Roellig hit .429 on the weekend with just one strikeout in 14 at bats. Core Jackson (.400) hit two homers, had six RBIs, walked five times and scored seven runs—one coming on a straight steal of home.
- The Utes' success in Tucson was also aided by quality starts from right-handers Colter McAnelly and Merit Jones. Each dealt seven innings of three-run baseball, with Jones allowing just two hits in his outing.
- Head coach Gary Henderson earned his 100th victory as Utah skipper during the Arizona series as well. Henderson eclipsed 400 career wins last season with a triumph over Oregon on May 22, 2024.
- Jackson, a member of the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List, continues to headline the Utah offense. He has hit .359 over his two seasons as a Utah Ute with 31 doubles, four triples, 16 home runs and 83 RBIs. He leads the team this season in batting average (.355), slugging (.645), OBP (.440), runs scored (57), RBIs (42), doubles (16) and home runs (12).
- Utah as a team has tallied 107 doubles this season; broken down per game (2.33) the Utes rank second in the Big 12.
- Jackson and Friday night ace Colter McAnelly were once again included in the latest D1Baseball.com position breakdowns. Jackson was listed as the No. 10 shortstop in the country and best in the Big 12, while the sophomore right-hander McAnelly was tabbed the No. 47 starter nationally.
- The final home series of the regular season awaits the Utes later this week against TCU. It runs from Thursday through Saturday at Smith's Ballpark and is expected to be the final games there for the Utes, before the team comes home to campus in 2026 and opens Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark.
- A full host of game promotions are on tap for the TCU series which will include Senior Day on Saturday. The Utes will recognize their eight-member senior class prior to Saturday's game; the group includes Mateus Conaway, Drake Digiorno, Jackson Elder, Core Jackson, Brady Joyner, Bransen Kuehl, Santino Panaro and Tyler Quinn.
This Week in Utah Baseball History
May 10, 2024 – Southpaw and Utah native
Bryson Van Sickle tosses a complete game three-hitter in a 6-1 win over No. 17-ranked Arizona during a Friday matinee at Smith's Ballpark. Van Sickle had eight strikeouts in his final home start and went on to be named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year. With a Maddux performance earlier that season against Arizona State, Van Sickle is likely one of the few pitchers in history to toss a complete game in the same season against both Arizona and ASU.
May 13, 2016 – The Utes win a 9-7 series opener over Stanford inside Smith's Ballpark. DaShawn Keirsey, Jr. went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI while Jayson Rose got the win on the mound and Dylan Drachler picked up a two-inning save. Utah eventually won the series via rubber game and took the Pac-12 Championship later in the year.
