SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah baseball team belted out 14 hits and held off a late Baylor rally in an 8-7 win Thursday night on Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark.
Â
Starting pitcher
Colter McAnelly picked up the win (3-7) in his five-inning outing. McAnelly climbed in the Utah baseball record book as he now has 207 career strikeouts, fourth-most in program history.
Demitri Diamant held down the fort in relief, recording a career-high eight strikeouts and retiring his first 10 batters faced.
Justin Abercrombie came on for a one-pitch, one out save—his third of the season.
Â
Five different Utah batters had a multi-hit night at the plate in
Luke Jacobs,
Cameron Gurney,
Jet Gilliam,
Matt Flaharty and
Jack Kleveno. Jacobs continued his multi-hit momentum from the Utah Tech matchup earlier in the week with a 3-for-4 line tonight, while Gurney clubbed his seventh home run of the season.
Â
Cal Miller singled in the game to push his reached base streak to 25 straight games, the longest streak for a Utah freshman since at least 2002.
Â
Utah (26-22, 12-16 Big 12) was hot out of the bat, tallying three runs and four hits in first inning. Jacobs, the leadoff man, set the tone with a double and later scored on a single from
Daniel Arambula. Gurney went yard with a 456-foot, two-run shot to secure an early 3-1 lead over the Bears.
Â
The Bears bit back with a solo homer in the top of the second but McAnelly stood tall and got out of the frame with no further damage. Then in the third, he answered a one-out single with a double play. Baylor took a 5-3 lead on a couple home runs in the fourth inning but McAnnelly proceeded to shut down the Baylor offense with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.
Â
Kleveno singled through the left side in the bottom of the fourth to plate Flaharty. Later on,
Jake Long logged his 56th RBI on the season with a sacrifice fly to bring in Kleveno and level the score at five-all.Â
Â
Utah would take the lead for good with a three-run bottom of the fifth, thanks to a two-run double from Flaharty and an RBI single for Jacobs that dropped into left field.
Â
Diamant took to the mound in the sixth, ultimately retiring his first nine batters. He fanned a pair of Bears in the sixth inning, struck out another in the seventh, then punched out the side in order in the eighth to preserve the 8-5 Utah lead.
Â
The Utes were able to load the bases with one out in the eighth, but Baylor scrambled out of the situation with a strikeout and a ground ball to keep Utah's lead at 8-5.
Â
The Bears made a late rally push in the top of the ninth with a two-run home run to bring the score within one. After Baylor put the tying run on first base, Abercrombie came into the game with two outs and had his first pitch grounded right back to the mound for a flip to first that ended the ballgame.
