SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah baseball team recorded 21 hits and grinded out a 16-9 win over Utah Tech on Tuesday on Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark. The Utes held off a late Utah Tech comeback attempt, pulling away late with a four-run eighth inning.
Â
Leadoff man
Luke Jacobs went 5-for-6 with two doubles, a home run, five RBIs and two runs scored as Jacobs finished a triple short of the cycle.
Cameron Gurney and
Matt Flaharty each doubled while
Jake Long, Gurney and Flaharty homered in the game as well for Utah (25-22). Flaharty had four RBIs to set a season-high.
Â
Eight different players had a multi-hit performance at the plate. It was Jacobs' first five-hit game as a Utah Ute and third such performance this season by a Utah player.
Â
Cal Miller went 2-for-4 and scored a run, extending Miller's on-base streak to 24 consecutive games—the longest by a Utah freshman since 2011.
Â
It was a staff day on the mound that saw eight different pitchers contribute for the Utes.
Ryan Kittredge (1-0) received the win with his two-inning start, while
Justin Abercrombie earned a save for his four up, four down outing to lock up the victory.
Â
The Utes batted around in the first inning to record seven runs on six hits as the team jumped out to a 10-0 lead after two frames. Jacobs led off the game with a single, setting the stage for a two-run homer for Long that measured at 416 feet over the center field wall. Four batters later,
Jet Gilliam got in on the action with a single to the left side to bring Gurney home to set the score at 3-0. Two-run doubles from Flaharty and Jacobs later in the inning swelled the Utes' lead to 7-0.
Â
Kittredge worked around a couple singles to begin the second inning and retired the next three batters to keep momentum in the Utah dugout.
Â
Utah padded its lead on the Trailblazers with three runs off four hits in the home half of the second. Gurney led off with his sixth home run of the year, a 387-foot shot to the left-center field wall. Later, Flaharty sent a pitch 419 feet to the right field berm, giving some young fans a souvenir to take home in the form of his fifth homer of the year.
Â
The Trailblazers made a furious rally push as the game went down the stretch, cutting the Utah lead to 11-9 by the top of the seventh.
Â
The Utes secured insurance in the eighth, with a four-run inning that allowed the home club to close out the ballgame. Base hits from Gilliam, Flaharty and
Blake Eckerle got things started, then Jacobs broke into the home run column with a three-run shot to right field, bringing the score to 16-9.
Â
Abercrombie came back out for the ninth inning and induced three straight groundouts to lock up the victory for the Utes.
