PROVO, Utah – The Utah baseball team scored twice in the ninth inning and got the tying run as far as third base, but the Utes were defeated by BYU 9-8 on Tuesday at Miller Park.
Though Utah and BYU are both Big 12 rivals, the game was a non-conference matchup and does not count toward the league standings.
Every batter in the Utah lineup had at least one hit and
Austen Roellig,
Derek Smith and
Matt Flaharty had a pair apiece including doubles for each. Roellig ranks second on the team with 15 doubles and Flaharty (14) is tied for third.
Flaharty and
Kaden Carpenter both clubbed two-run home runs in the game as well. The long ball for Carpenter was his fifth of the season and Flaharty now has two homers on the year.
Tyler Quinn singled, walked twice, scored a run and had a sac fly to extend his hitting streak to 10 straight games. Carpenter reached base safely for the 14
th straight game. And
Santino Panaro returned to the lineup, contributing an RBI single and scoring one run.
BYU got on the board with a bases-loaded walk in its half of the first inning. But
Brady Joyner followed with a strikeout and a fly ball to left field as the frame ended with no further damage.
The Utes were able to even things back up at two in the top of the third, beginning when Panaro reached on a hit by pitch. Roellig followed with a one-out single on which Panaro reached third; he scored when Quinn hit a sac fly to left field. Roellig took third on the sacrifice and later scored on a wild pitch as the score was leveled at two.
But the home club had an answer in the bottom half of the third, stringing together four hits and taking advantage of a Utah error as the Cougars plated five runs for a 7-2 score.
A pair of runs in the fifth helped the Utes begin to chip away. Quinn laced a leadoff single up the middle and was followed by Carpenter taking a 2-1 pitch over the center field fence past the 402-foot marker. Left-handed pitcher
Mateus Conaway worked around a walk in the bottom half of the inning as the score moved to 7-4 through five innings of play.
Core Jackson went opposite field in the sixth for a two-out RBI single, getting the Utes back within two as Flaharty came home on the play. Utah proceeded to load the bases after back-to-back walks but were unable to do any further damage in the run column.
Smith led off the ninth with a double off the top of the wall in straightaway center, setting the stage for a two-run tank off the bat of Flaharty and suddenly it was a one-run ballgame with Utah trailing 9-8.
Two batters later, Roellig sent the first pitch to the gap in left-center for a double to put the tying run in scoring position. A fielder's choice got him up to third base but that would be all for the Utes as a strikeout ended the ballgame.
Utah used five pitchers on the mound.
Carter Wall (0-1) received the loss.
