TUCSON, Ariz. –
Drake Digiorno had his first multi-home run game as a member of the Utah baseball program, but the Utes came up just short in their bid for a series sweep falling to No. 18 Arizona by an 8-7 score on Sunday at Hi Corbett Field.
Both of Digiorno's homers came in clutch moments; his first of the afternoon was a two-out solo shot in the sixth inning to tie the score at four. Then in the top of the eighth, he clubbed a two-run rocket as the score moved to 7-7. For the season, he now has four home runs and 20 RBIs.
Tyler Quinn,
Matt Flaharty and
Jack Kleveno each doubled despite the loss. Quinn's day extended his hitting streak to nine straight games. Flaharty and Digiorno each went 2-for-4 and scored twice. Flaharty's double drove in a run as well.
Arizona won the battle to the scoreboard, plating a pair in the second inning. A two-run homer for the Wildcats extended their lead to 4-0 after four innings of play.
A two-out rally for the Utes in the fifth brought the club back within a run. Back-to-back doubles from Flaharty and Kleveno knocked in Quinn and
Jake Long, respectively, then
Austen Roellig punched a single up the middle to bring in Kleveno with Utah's third run of the day.
Roellig got into scoring position after an errant pickoff throw but was stranded at second base.
Coming back out to pitch the bottom of the fifth,
Easton Jones struck out a pair and worked around a walk to get Utah back to the bats. Digiorno clubbed his first homer of the day with two outs in the sixth, evading the glove of a leaping Easton Breyfogle near the left field videoboard.
The teams continued to trade runs, with Arizona pulling back ahead 5-4 on a wild pitch in the home half of the sixth.
Core Jackson brought Flaharty home with a sac fly in the seventh to tie the score again, but the Wildcats answered with a pair in the bottom half to take a 7-5 lead.
The Utes were ready to punch back, however, and quickly.
Kaden Carpenter was put on base after being hit by the first pitch of the eighth inning and Digiorno followed with a first-pitch blast over the left-field wall. Long stole second base later in the inning but was left there as the score was now tied for the third time—now at seven apiece.
In the bottom of the eighth, Arizona led off with a double to the gap in left center and brought in the go-ahead run with a one-out single up the middle.
Utah used seven pitchers in the game.
Dillon Fine (0-2) received the loss on the mound.
