POCATELLO, Idaho –
Hailey Maestretti threw a complete game without allowing an earned run and struck out a career-high seven to the lead University of Utah softball team to a 3-1 victory over the Idaho State Bengals in the first game of a doubleheader that saw the Utes fall in game two, 5-3, on Monday afternoon on the final day of the Black and Orange Classic at Miller Ranch Stadium in Pocatello, Idaho.
Utah is now 8-19.
Game One
The Utes broke out the bats in the second inning to seize the game's first lead, starting the frame with an
Emily Capobianco double and
Hailey Deter traded places with her teammate by lacing her own two-bagger into left-center. Deter dented home plate moments later thanks to a
Shonty Passi single and an error, making the score 2-0.
Kaylah Nelsen added to that advantage in the third with a long fly to left that found the foul pole for her second homer of 2025.
Through the first three innings, Maestretti kept the Bengals off the board, getting help in the form of a spectacular diving catch in the first by
Sianni Sakai that saved a run. ISU did close to within 3-1 thanks to an unearned run in the fourth.
After a scoreless fifth by Maestretti that included a pair of strikeouts, she received some more help from her defense in the sixth, starting with another diving snag by Sakai in left-center. The next two batters were each thrown out trying to reach second, the first by
Reese Lee and the second by
Marley Espiau. Maestretti then closed the victory with a perfect seventh.
In seven innings of work, Maestretti did not give up a single extra base hit and set a new career-high by punching out seven. Over her last eight outings, the freshman from Colorado now owns a 1.50 ERA.
Game Two
The early advantage was again grabbed by the visiting team in game two, thanks to a second inning uprising that included a Lee RBI triple and a run-scoring safety off the bat of
Hailee White.
The Bengals mounted their comeback in the fourth, with three straight two-out singles bringing in one run. After a walk loaded the bases, a Rebecca Quinn grand slam put the home team in front.
Shelbee Jones spent the next two innings shutting out the Bengals and the Utes got one of those runs back thanks to an RBI infield hit by Lee, but they couldn't close the gap completely. Utah brought up the tying run in the seventh, but a double play ended the game.

Utah will begin Big 12 play with three games in Tucson against the Arizona Wildcats, starting with a 7 p.m. contest on Friday.
