SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Soccer kept its undefeated record at home intact with a 0-0 double-overtime draw against Arizona this evening. The Utes had their chances but the woodwork was unkind as
Tavia Leachman hit the post in the second half and Lulu Borges headed a try off the crossbar in overtime.
"We played with tremendous grit and determination," head coach
Rich Manning said. "Arizona is a physical team that presses all over the field. There were not many opportunities to put the ball on the ground and get clean possessions but we played aggressively and created some good chances. I am proud of the effort."
Utah had a great chance early when
Ireland Dunn's try was tipped away by UA goalkeeper Hope Hisey. The ensuing corner fell to
Courtney Talbot but Hisey collected the ball. Arizona also had its opportunities as
Tavia Leachman made a sliding block on a Jada Talley effort and
Carly Nelson made a leaping denial of Brooke Wilson.
Hisey made a big save early in the second half, stopping
Holly Daugirda and just past the hour mark, Leachman had her chance. However, the post kept her from breaking the deadlock and Borges' rebound attempt sailed into Hisey's arms.
Kristin Fairbairn had a couple chances late in regulation but Utah wound up heading to overtime for a fourth time in six games.
Utah earned a corner in the 94
th minute and Borges smashed her attempt off the crossbar.
Daugirda had another look in the waning seconds of the first overtime but Hisey was able to hold on. The last chance of the game fell to Gwerder but her rocket from the far side of the pitch hit the side netting.
Utah is back home on Thursday for a game against Cal. Kick-off is set for a 7 p.m. and the contest can be seen live on UtahUtes.com. Prior to the game, Utah student-athletes will be in the Ute Field parking lot for the annual Trunk-or-Treat event.
