SALT LAKE CITY – An early second-half goal for
Hailey Skolmoski allowed Utah Soccer to end the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 1-0 win.
In the 49
th minute,
Kristin Fairbairn lofted a cross from the right side that eventually fell at Skolmoski's feet. The senior found herself with some time and space before shooting into the left side of the goal for the winner.
Skolmoski moved into fifth place all-time with the 26
th goal of her career, matching Jacki Doman (1995-96). For Fairbairn, it was her second assist of the season after not registering a point all of last year.
"We made an adjustment at halftime that allowed us to press a little more," Skolmoski said. "It was nice to get this one after a rough patch of games and before we head into conference play."
"We need to stay confident in ourselves,"
Paola van der Veen added. "We have to take everything one game at a time and keep playing aggressively."
Utah dominated from the kick, registering 18 shots, seven on goal. The defense limited Nevada to four shots, none on frame.
Carly Nelson notched her second shutout of the season and seventh of her career.
In the first half,
Anna Escobedo created the most trouble for the Wolf Pack, firing two at Kendal Stovall in goal.
Jessica Hixson, Van der Veen and Fairbairn all tested the Nevada goalkeeper who kept the game scoreless.
After Skolmoski's goal, Utah could have added another through Van der Veen. Despite their best efforts, the Utes were unable to score a second despite dominating possession in Nevada's end of the field.
