Utah 7, Maryland 1
Utah got out of the blocks in the second as
Hailey Hilburn slapped a ball through the left side of the infield.
BreOnna Castaneda followed with a two-run blast to get the Utes up and running. It was Castaneda's third home run of the season, matching her output from last season.
The Terrapins got a pair of infield singles in the third but Donovan retired the next three batters to keep them off the board. The shutout was short-lived as Anna Kufta hit her first homer of the season to start the fourth.
Utah missed a chance to open things up in the sixth when
Heather Bowen walked and
Kelly Martinez bunted her up to second. Aubrey Robertson entered to pinch-run and moved to third on a Hilburn single. However, she was tagged in a rundown during a failed squeeze attempt.
The big inning turned out to be the seventh.
Chandler Walter led off with a double and a wild pitch moved her over to third.
Alyssa Palacios reached on an error and
Alyssa Barrera was intentionally walked to load the bases.
After a force at home, Bowen slapped a ball off the glove of the Maryland third baseman down the left-field line to score a pair of runs. Now up three, Martinez laced a ball to right that tipped off the diving fielder's glove. With two more runs crossing the plate and Martinez headed to third, the throw went awry which allowed the Utah catcher to come home for a 7-1 lead.
For the second game in a row, Donovan struck out eight batters. This time, she did so while throwing a complete game, improving to 7-1 on the season
Utah 2, Miami (OH) 1
The Redhawks threatened in the second with a two-out single to center followed by a walk. However,
Miranda Viramontes struck out the next batter on three pitches to keep it scoreless.
A single up the middle and a walk put runners on in the third for Miami. An easy grounder to third base turned unfortunate for Utah as
Heather Bowen got her cleat stuck and appeared to twist her ankle. The Ute third baseman was able to stay in the game but Kat Lee singled up the middle for a 1-0 Redhawk lead.
In the fourth, a four-pitch walk and hit batsman led to a Utah pitching change.
Katie Donovan induced a pair of fly outs to keep it a one-run game.
With the momentum teetering between the sides, Utah grabbed it when Bowen and
Kelly Martinez hit back-to-back homers to open the fourth. It was Bowen's third homer of the season and 17
th of her career, while it was the first of 2018 for Martinez and the ninth of her tenure.
It remained a tense one-run game for the remainder of the contest but neither team truly threatened the other.
Donovan earned the win and moved into third place all-time on the Utah career strikeout list by mowing down eight of the 12 batters she faced in relief.
Utah has off tomorrow before playing the Terrapins again on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. The Utes will then take on Yale at 5:30 p.m. later in the day
