For the first time in her career, first baseman Tia Palauni was named to the All-West Region Softball Second Team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Thursday.
Palauni, a junior from Taylorsville, Utah, is already fifth on the school's all-time walk list after drawing a single-season record 41 free passes this season. She also posted the highest single-season on-base percentage in school history (.545). This year, Palauni led the team with a .678 slugging percentage (minimum 50 at-bats) and was second on the team with a .333 batting average. Palauni posted seven multi-RBI performances as well as six multi-hit games this season. She began the season on what turned out to be a team-best 14-game hit streak from Feb. 10 to Mar. 9.
Palauni was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week for the second time in her career after the first week of the season, hitting .583 over five games at the season-opening Kajikawa Classic with seven hits in 12 at-bats, six runs scored and eight RBI. At then-No. 13/10 Arizona State, the Utes were down 1-0 to the Sun Devils in the bottom of the eighth inning when Palauni connected on a walk-off three-run home run for the key road win.
A total of 258 players from 126 different institutions comprise this season's regional teams, including first and second teams for each region. The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, and all the honorees will now be eligible for selection to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America first, second or third teams.
Utah finished the season with a 29-22 overall record and was 7-5 in the MWC to place fourth in its final year in the conference.
