COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Four members of the University of Utah softball team were named to the Mountain West All-Conference Softball Team for the first time in their respective careers, the league office announced Tuesday. Four Utes selected to the all-conference squad is the most since 2006.
A member of each class on the Utah squad was selected, led by senior catcher Brooke Olson. The Bluffdale, Utah native tied for third in doubles in the MWC's conference-only stats (4), ranked fourth in slugging percentage (.794) and finished seventh in on-base percentage (.511). She was second on the squad this season with 12 multi-hit games and also had five games in which she drove in at least two runs. Her season was highlighted by a 4-for-4 effort with a home run and two RBI in a road win at New Mexico on May 5. She also hit a solo home run to center field in the second game of Utah's doubleheader at BYU last Saturday (May 14).
Junior third baseman Whitney Holm led the team with nine home runs this season and also drove in a team-high 34 runs. The Spanish Fork, Utah native tied for sixth in the conference-only statistics with 14 RBI during league play. She ended the season on a 10-game hit streak and also posted 11 multi-hit games to go with a team-high eight multi-RBI performances. Holm had a pair of two-home run games this season, first on March 9 at Southern Utah when she drove in three runs, then again at home in the first game of a doubleheader against Boise State, she was credited with four RBI. In an April 16 game at UNLV, Holm was 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run and a double to total five RBI.
Sophomore shortstop Kelsi Hoopiiaina finished sixth among the MWC leaders with a .419 batting average in league games. She also tied for ninth with a .500 on-base percentage. The Riverton, Utah native had two or more hits in eight games and had six multi-RBI outings this year. She was active in the field as well, turning in a .941 fielding percentage with 79 putouts and 98 assists from her shortstop post in the Ute defense. `Hoop' turned in three 4-RBI performances this season: during the second game of the doubleheader at George Mason (Mar. 22) and in home games against Idaho State (Apr. 1) and New Mexico (Apr. 23).
Freshman outfielder Chalese Fankhauser ended the season second on the team with a .339 batting average to go with 27 RBI and was also 9-of-13 on stolen base attempts. She also tied for fourth in the MWC's overall statistics with eight sacrifice bunts, tied for seventh with two sacrifice flies and tied for fifth with nine stolen bases. A native of South Jordan, Utah, Fankhauser hit .750 during Utah's 2-1 final road trip of the season at New Mexico and Colorado State. She had six hits, including a home run and a double, in eight official at-bats to go with five RBI and four runs scored against the Lobos and Rams. She also drew three walks and stole a base.
