LOGAN, Utah - Five different Utes collected hits but the University of Utah softball team was defeated by Utah State, 12-2 in five innings, Tuesday at LaRue and LeGrand Johnson Field.
Utah (27-18) had its four-game win streak snapped but the Utes still have won 11 of their last 13 games.
Sophomore left fielder Sandi Bowles registered two hits in two at-bats and scored a run. Starting pitcher Brittany Parker hit an RBI double, while Tara Glover came up with an RBI single. Kelsi Hoopiiaina and Whitney Holm both had hits for the Utes as well.
Parker started on the mound for the second time this season and went 1.1 innings while allowing three earned runs on two hits. She also struck out two and walked two but suffered the loss in her first decision of the season. Joni Cook came on in relief to pitch the final 2.2 innings and yielded eight earned runs on eight hits. Cook also collected one strikeout and issued a pair of walks.
The Utes held off an Aggie threat in the bottom of the first when a two-out throwing error and a double to left-center field allowed USU to put runners on second and third base.
Utah lifted the lid on the scoring in the first inning, beginning when Holm hit a two-out single to right field. Parker then helped herself by looping a double to right field that allowed Holm to score from second base. Parker now has 12 hits and 12 RBI this season. Unfortunately, Utah is now 20-10 this season when scoring first.
Utah State responded with 12 unanswered runs to take a 12-1 lead.
Bowles started the top of the fifth inning by hitting a single up the middle of the Aggie defense. After Bowles moved to second on a groundout, Glover followed with another single up the middle then Bowles scored on a USU throwing error to set the final margin at 12-2.
Mandy Harmon of Utah State (10-38) picked up the win after holding the Utes scoreless on one hit in 2.0 innings.
