SALT LAKE CITY - Three softball student-athletes signed National Letters of Intent during the early signing period, University of Utah head coach Amy Hogue announced Tuesday. This is Hogue's fourth recruiting class as head coach of the Utes. Joining the team as freshmen in 2012-13 will be Eryn McCarver, Kayce Nieto and Shelby Pacheco. The three student-athletes will enroll at Utah as freshmen next fall.
"The group as a whole has the confidence it needs to do well in our conference," Hogue said. "We talk a lot about our strengths as individuals and our strengths as a team. We need to focus on what we do well and not worry about what everyone else is doing. These kids do that well already. If they can remain confident, they will be able to help us win games right away."
Eryn McCarver (UTIL/Tulsa, Okla./Holland Hall Prep/Tulsa Eagles Gold)
Member of two Southwestern Preparatory Conference Division 1 championship teams (2009-10) at Holland Hall Prep under coach Dave Bach ... two-time all-SPC and all-SPC North Zone selection ... set school's single-season record for steals with 24 in 16 games during 2010 ... owns school record for hits in a single season with 32 in 2011, in addition to 32 more steals that season ... named the Rookie of the Year in 2009 ... also was the starting goalkeeper for three years on the field hockey team at Holland Hall Prep ... two-year letterwinner on the basketball team ... helped travel team win the ASA 16U A State championship in 2008 ... participated in ASA Nationals twice, first as the youngest player from Oklahoma at the 18U Gold Nationals in 2009 and in the 2010 16U ASA A Nationals ... squad finished in the top 10 at the 2010 Independence Day Tournament in Boulder, Colo., before tying for 17th in 2011 ... tied for 25th at the Premier Gold Nationals in Huntington Beach, Calif., last summer ... intends to pursue a career in sports medicine.
Hogue on McCarver: "[McCarver] is a pure athlete. She is our most versatile recruit in this class and has experience as a middle infielder, a catcher, and an outfielder. She's primarily a slap hitter, but is strong and has gap power with her swing. She's a competitor."
Kayce Nieto (P/Farmington Hills, Mich./Mercy HS)
Currently boasts a career 0.48 ERA after three seasons at Mercy High School for coach Eddy Ketelhut ... also has a .480 batting average and 15 home runs over her career ... holds the Michigan high school state record and is third all-time nationally for strikeouts in a single game (behind record-holder Lisa Fernandez) - 41 in a 21-inning game ... named to all-state, all-region, all-district and all-Catholic League teams each of the last two seasons ... selected to the Detroit Free Press Dream Team in 2010 and 2011 ... Oakland Press June 2010 Athlete of the Month ... has been a member of state championship teams at every age level ... member of the National Honor Society.
Hogue on Nieto: "[Nieto] has all of the tools to succeed at the next level. [Pitching coach Cody] Thomson says her pitching fundamentals are right on. She will be able to learn and grow so much as a pitcher because of the solid base she has built with her current pitching coach. She can swing the bat well, too."
Shelby Pacheco (C/Casa Granda, Ariz./Union HS/Arizona Hotshots 18U Gold)
Played on varsity team at Union for four years under coach Freddy Cabinillas ... first-team all-region selection each of the last two seasons ... chosen to second-team all-region team as a freshman ... a three-year varsity letterwinner as an outside hitter on the volleyball team, also served as team captain and was named MVP ... member of National Honor Society ... earned Academic Excellence award ... played travel ball with Arizona Hotshots 18U Gold, which took first place at the Western National Championships in 2008 ... intends to major in Psychology at Utah and pursue counseling and therapy as a profession.
Hogue on Pacheco: "[Pacheco] has one of the liveliest arms I've ever recruited behind the plate. I stopped in my tracks when I was out recruiting and saw her playing. If you don't have an arm like her's at the catcher position, you will get eaten alive in this conference."
