SALT LAKE CITY - Utah softball coach Amy Hogue has announced the hiring of Cody Thomson as an assistant coach. Thomson has served as a volunteer assistant coach for Utah since 2004, working primarily with the Ute pitchers.
"Cody embodies all the qualities I am looking for in an assistant coach," Hogue said. "During his time as a volunteer, I have seen the immense impact Cody has had training pitchers at this level. I have big plans for this program and he is the right guy to get our pitchers in a position to win on a daily basis."
A former pitcher on the USA Softball Men's National Team, Thomson brings a wealth of experience to the Utes. Thomson played for the national team from 2004 to 2008, helping USA Softball finish second at the 2008 International Softball Federation Men's World Cup in Prague.
Thomson has played for the local Larry Miller team for the last 10 years. He was named Best Pitcher at the North American Fastpitch Association World Series in 2006 and was also an AAU Gold medalist. In 2007, Thomson earned a silver medal at the International Softball Federation Men's World Cup, where he posted a 2-0 record with 18 strikeouts.
The four-time Amateur Softball Association All-American earned first-team recognition in 1998, 2000 and 2001. Thomson helped the Salt Lake Miners win the ASA Men's 23-Under National Championship in 2002 and place second in 2001.
Early in his playing career, Thomson was picked to play for the U-19 World Team in New Finland, Canada in 1996.
Thomson began his coaching career at Copper Hills High School (Utah) in 1996 and served as an assistant at Southern Utah University in 1998. Thomson has also trained pitchers at camps and clinics in Utah and Idaho since 1998.
Thomson is married to the former Amanda Tuft and has three children: Mikaela (10), Chase (6) and Cayden (4).
