OREM, Utah - Junior centerfielder Kara Foster set the University of Utah home run record with her 50th career round-tripper in the third inning of the second game and the Utes split a doubleheader at Utah Valley, winning the first game 4-2 and losing the second game 6-4, Tuesday afternoon at Mstar Field.
After the split, Utah's overall record now stands at 18-26, while Utah Valley is 15-23.
Foster, a junior from Derby, Kan., now holds Utah's school record and has hit 15 round-trippers this year to go along with 32 RBI. She went 4-for-7 on the day and scored two runs while drawing a walk.
Tori Medina was 2-for-3 at the plate in the two games. The Taylorsville, Utah native's performance was highlighted by a triple, run scored and a walk.
Game 1: Utah 4, Utah Valley 2
Senior center-fielder Angie Boardman registered her eighth multiple-RBI game of the season, driving in two runs while going 1-for-3 at the plate.
Ashley Smuda earned the win in the circle for the Utes to improve to 12-8 this season, pitching 6.1 innings. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native pitched the first six innings of the game then re-entered to get the final out of the contest. On the day, Smuda allowed two earned runs on seven hits while striking out three Wolverines and walking two. Brittany Parker got the first two outs of the seventh inning and did not surrender a hit to UVU.
The Utes got on the board in the top of the first inning when Brooke Olson and Foster led off with back-too-back singles. The duo advanced one base each after a sacrifice bunt by Staci Hemingway. Boardman then drove in Olson for the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center field.
In the third frame, Foster drew a one-out walk then Boardman drove in her second run of the contest with an RBI single up the middle.
Amber Sackett opened scoring for the Wolverines with a two-out two-run home run over the left-center-field fence to push Meghan Woodworth across the plate and to tie the score at two runs apiece.
Sophomore second baseman Jasey Jensen connected on her second home of the season with one out in the sixth inning. The Layton, Utah native drove in her sixth run of the season over the fence in left-center field.
Medina followed with a pinch triple down the right-field line then senior shortstop Sharee Fonoti drove Medina in with a ground ball to shortstop for the Utes' fourth run of the game. Medina's triple was her first extra-base hit of the season and led to her second run scored. Fonoti was credited with her ninth run batted in of the year.
Jessica Martin got the start for the Wolverines and allowed four earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and four walks.
Game 2: Utah Valley 6, Utah 4
Foster went 3-for-4 at the plate in the second game with one RBI and one run scored, while Holm got two hits in four at-bats with one run driven in.
Lindsey Palmer took the decision for the Utes, but fell to 3-6 this year. Palmer allowed two earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts while allowing two walks.
The Utes once again got off to a quick start and threatened in the first inning when Foster led off with a single to left field and advanced to second after Hemingway lad down a sacrifice bunt. Utah had runners on the corners after Boardman reached first base after a fielder's choice by UVU's shortstop allowed Foster to take third base as well.
Utah Valley put together a three-run second inning that began with three consecutive hits, including a leadoff double to right-center field by Amber Sackett. Kylee Steadman followed with a single to center field and Sackett scored after a Ute throwing error. The Wolverines scored their second run of the game as an RBI double by Cherylyn McGraw drove Sackett across the plate. Amanda Perez then placed a bases-loaded sacrifice bunt just in front of home plate that allowed McGraw to score.
Utah got one run back with one down in the third inning as Foster blasted her 50th career home run over the right-field fence to cut the UVU edge to 3-1.
Utah got the equalizer in the fourth inning as Medina led off the frame with a single and was moved over to second base by a sacrifice bunt by Olson. Haylee Hoch stepped up and drove in her first career run with an RBI single to plate Foster and tie the game at three runs apiece.
Samantha Telearroja and Megan Kisner both drew walks to start the fifth inning before Lauren Augino dropped down a bunt single. With the bases loaded, Magan Niemann singled to drive in Telerroja. After Steadman was ruled out as a result of the infield fly rule, Augino scored the Wolverines' sixth run of the game. Utah Valley set the final margin at 6-4 in the sixth inning when Amanda Perez hit a solo home run to left field.
Utah continues on the road tomorrow with a doubleheader at Southern Utah. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. in Cedar City, Utah.
