The University of Utah softball team will appear on television twice this week as the Utes host UNLV and San Diego State. Thursday's game against UNLV will be broadcast live on CBS College Sports at 4 p.m. Friday's home tilt against San Diego State will appear on the The Mtn. at 3 p.m. Utah closes out the week Saturday at 1 p.m. against the Aztecs at Ute Field.
First-timers: This week marks the first time a Utah softball game has been televised this season. Jason Knapp (PBP) and Ann Schatz (color) will have the call of Thursday's game, while Anne Marie Anderson (PBP) and Teri Goldberg (color) will have the call for The Mtn.'s telecast on Friday.
Homestanding Utes: Utah caps a five-game home stretch this week, its longest string of home games this season. So far, Utah is sporting a 2-3 record in the friendly confines of Ute Softball Field.
In-state talent: Eleven of Utah's 18 student-athletes on its softball roster are natives of the Beehive State. "I want to have a majority of the team built around kids from the state of Utah," head coach Amy Hogue said. "Some of the most successful seasons that we have had here have been led by local kids. That's a true testament to what I believe builds a strong program. There's plenty of talent in the state of Utah and I want people to realize that."
Deseret First Duel recap: Utah dropped a pair of games to BYU last Friday and Saturday at Ute Softball Field. In the first game of the Deseret First Duel Series, Utah got solo home runs by Angie Boardman (Spokane, Wash.) and Hannah Clements (Poway, Calif.) in the fifth inning, Utah took an 11-2 loss. In the second game, Utah got hits from Brooke Olson (Bluffdale, Utah), Jasey Jensen (Layton, Utah) and Brittany Parker (Murray, Utah), but could not avoid a 15-0 loss.
Utes dig the long ball: Utah leads the MWC with 39 home runs this season. Eleven different Utes have notched round-trippers this year, led by Kara Foster (Derby, Kan.) (13), Whitney Holm (Spanish Fork, Utah) (8), Boardman (5), Staci Hemingway (West Valley, Utah) (3), Clements (3), Olson (2), Sharee Fonoti (Ewa Beach, Hawaii) (1), Andrea Hoffman (West Valley, Utah) (1), Jensen (1), Bonnie Muir (West Jordan, Utah) (1) and Tia Palauni (Taylorsville, Utah) (1).
Close-call Utes: The Utes have been in 11 one-run games this season so far and have a 7-4 mark in those contests. Two of Utah's home games have been decided by 1-0 scores, against Boise State in the home opener on Mar. 18 and Utah State on Apr. 6.
`Bring it On': One of Utah's mottos this season has been `Bring it On.' The statement is reflected in the team's difficult schedule it has taken on so far, including eight games against five opponents who were ranked in either of the national polls at the time: No. 15/21 Washington, No. 21/18 Nevada, No. 11/11 Arizona, No. 3/4 UCLA and No. 17 Texas A&M.
Foster approaching Utah's career home run record: Foster is one round-tripper away from tying Melissa Stahnke (2001-04) for the school record. April 2 at New Mexico, she hit her 48th career home run, 13th of the season, to tie the game at 4-4 in the fifth inning.
Clean-fielding Utes: Utah stands third in the MWC in fielding percentage with a .965 mark.
Utes in the Mountain: The Utes have dropped their first four decisions in conference play in 2009 and saw their all-time conference record dip to 300-203-1, good for a .596 winning percentage. Last season, Utah finished third in the MWC after going 10-10 last season in league play in its first season under head coach Amy Hogue.
Utes fourth in MWC Preseason Poll: Utah was tabbed fourth in the 2009 MWC Preseason Poll, the conference office announced Jan. 28. The Utes tallied 14 points in the voting, picked to finish sixth in last season's voting before placing third in 2009. SDSU tied for first place in the preseason poll, while UNLV was third.
Last time against UNLV: On April 24, 2008, Foster led the rally for the Utes in a pair of come-from-behind victories against UNLV, winning game one, 8-7, and game two, 3-2. The game was moved to Utah Valley University due to field conditions at Ute Field. Foster went 3-for-5 in game one with three RBI. In the second game, the Utes would take the lead in the sixth inning. Foster took advantage of the UNLV left fielder's misplay for a leadoff triple. She would later score with a well-played suicide squeeze bunt.
Last time against SDSU: Meghan Crouse scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead Utah to a 2-1 victory over No. 19 San Diego State at Ute Field on April 26, 2008.
Crouse led off the inning, reaching base when the Aztecs first baseman dropped a clean throw after hitting a ground ball to the pitcher. Diana Phillips beat out a bunt for a single, putting two on with no outs. Fonoti advanced both runners with a bunt. Devina Quintero struck out to give Utah two outs before the wild pitch sent Crouse home to win the game.
Scouting the competition:
UNLV (25-14, 2-3 MWC): The Rebels snapped their four-game losing streak by winning two of three home games at Eller Media Stadium last weekend. On Friday against New Mexico, UNLV earned an 8-7 win in eight innings. The Rebels suffered a 4-1 loss to Colorado State on Saturday, then took down the Rams, 12-4 in six innings, on Sunday. In the last game against the Rams, shortstop Jaci Hull went 3-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored.
SDSU (27-14, 4-1 MWC): The Aztecs saw its season-long nine-game winning streak come to an end with a 3-1 loss to New Mexico Sunday. The Aztecs committed three errors and managed only three hits against the Lobos. The loss was the first by SDSU since the opening game of a doubleheader against Texas Tech on March 17 and ends a 10-game winning streak in league contests, dating back to last season. The Aztecs begin a six-game road trip at first-place BYU on Thursday.
