SALT LAKE CITY - Bryn Card threw six innings of shutout ball and Jesse Shriner went 5-for-5 with five RBI, but it wasn't enough as BYU erased a 10-run deficit and rallied for the 13-10 win over the University of Utah baseball team here this afternoon.
Card got the start for Utah (23-26, 10-14 Mountain West) and blanked BYU for six innings. The junior right-hander scattered five hits, and didn't allow a single run. He issued just one walk. While he was on the mound, Shriner led a potent offense. He helped the Utes race out to 10-0 lead, plating an RBI in each of his first four at bats. Two of his RBI came in the sixth when he hit a one-out, two-run homer over the right field fence. It was his eighth shot of the year, and it gave Utah the 10-0 lead.
"This is as disappointing a game as I have ever been a part of," said head coach Bill Kinneberg. "We were up 10 runs with six outs to play, and that makes it a tough loss to take. We have to find out where things went wrong today and fix it.
"The nice thing is we have BYU in the first round of the Mountain West Conference on Tuesday. We may have lost this battle, but the war continues next week."
When Utah went to the bullpen, BYU rallied. Stephen Streich came on in the seventh, pitching for one inning and allowing four runs. Robert Chimpky took the mound for two-thirds of an innings, and he allowed eight runs on seven hits. Chimpky takes the loss and falls to 0-5 on the year.
"Bryn Card was terrific in his start today," noted Kinneberg. "He did a tremendous job. He threw strikes, got them to pop out, and he put zeros on the board. Bryn threw six innings of solid ball today."
BYU awoke in the eighth inning, effectively wiping out its 10-run deficit. It sent 16 batters to the plate, and the Cougars tallied 12 runs on 11 hits in that inning. The Utes tried to counter in the eighth as well. They had two on with no one out, but they couldn't convert it into runs. BYU plated another in the ninth to take the three-run win.
"BYU did everything right at the end of the game," continued Kinneberg. "They hit ground balls and line drives, putting the ball in play. They made the adjustments at the plate, and they were able to score."
The Utes finish in fifth place in the league, and they will battle BYU (the MWC Tournament fourth seed) in the first round on Tuesday night. First pitch at the campus of TCU is set for 7 p.m. (CDT).
