FORT WORTH, Texas - University of Utah hurler Brian Budrow had a gem of a performance on the mound tonight, helping the Ute baseball team to a 9-3 win over BYU here in the first round of the Mountain West Conference Tournament. Utah advances to face the tourney's No. 2 seed, New Mexico, tomorrow at 3 p.m. (CDT).
Budrow, who came in to the tournament on 10 days rest, had a one-hit shutout through 6.1 innings, allowing the Utes (23-26 overall) to build an 8-0 lead on BYU. He finished giving up three runs, two of which were earned. The right-handed pitcher earns the win in scattering five hits, fanning 10 BYU batters in the process. Budrow threw the first complete game of his career.
Utah hammered out 10 hits. Tyler Relf led the way with a 3-for-5 night, plating two RBI. He was one of four Utah batters with two RBI to their credit. Both Dustin Hennis and Corey Shimada had a pair of RBI. Hennis' came off of a two-run homer in the third, and Shimada's on another two-run shot in the fourth. Jesse Shriner also plated a pair of runs.
It was Shimada's homer in the fourth that was the difference-maker for Utah.
The Utes got on the board in the first. With no outs and runners on the corner, Shriner hit into a double play, but that scored Shimada from third base. Hennis's homer in the third inning tripled the Ute lead, 3-0.
Three more Utah runs came in the fourth. In addition to Shimada's two-run homer, Shriner hit an RBI double to score Cody Guymon all the way from the first. Guymon got hit by a pitch after Shimada's homer, and Shirner hit a rocket down the left field line to make it 6-0, Utah.
Relf had RBI singles in the fifth and ninth innings, and Shriner had a sac fly to right field in the sixth.
BYU's Jake Wortham, who Utah beat 5-3 just last Thursday, takes the loss tonight. In all, the Cougars used three different pitchers.
The Cougars scored three runs in the last three innings. Two of came in the seventh off of Steve Parker's home run. BYU plated one last run in the bottom of the ninth.
