PROVO, Utah - Behind a pair of home runs from Kara Foster and Devina Quintero, the Utah softball team rallied for a come-from-behind win over BYU, 6-4, in Provo on Saturday afternoon.
With BYU holding a 4-3 lead after five innings, Quintero and Foster led off the sixth inning with back-to-back home runs to put the Utes on top, 5-4.
Utah added an insurance run in the seventh inning. With two runners on base following singles and subsequent stolen bases from Diana Phillips and Meghan Crouse, Sharee Fonoti hit into a sacrifice fly which scored Crouse, boosting the lead to 6-4
Down 3-0 going into the fourth inning, the Utes tallied three runs in the inning to tie the score, 3-3. Quintero reached on a fielders choice and was replaced by pinch runner Tori Medina. Angie Boardman singled up the middle to put two on base, while Kristie Keller scored both runners with a double to right field. The right fielder mishandled the ball, allowing Keller to come around and score.
BYU would come back to take a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fourth on Amanda Vance's RBI single before Utah took the lead for good in the sixth inning.
Utah's seven hits all came from seven different players. In addition to Keller's two RBI, Fonoti, Quintero and Foster all drove in runs during the game.
Ashley Smuda earned her 14th win of the season in the circle, striking out four in the victory.
Utah earned 1.5 points in the Deseret First Dual with the win. The Cougars lead the Dual, 29.5-26.
The Utes return to action on Thursday, April 24, with a home doubleheader beginning at 2:00 pm against UNLV.
