SALT LAKE CITY - Three student-athletes signed National Letters-of-Intent during the early signing period, University of Utah head coach Amy Hogue announced. This is Hogue's second recruiting class since taking over as head coach of the Utes.
Joining the team beginning in the 2009-10 season are Sandi Bowles, Alyssa Garcia and Kelsi Hoopiana. All three student-athletes will enter Utah as freshmen.
Bowles and Hoopiana are local recruits who look to continue the Utes' long-standing tradition of players from the Beehive State contributing to successful Utah teams.
"It's an exciting thing not just for me, but for Sandi and Kelsi, to play here at Utah and represent our home state," Hogue said. "I want to have a majority of the team built around kids from the state of Utah. Some of the most successful seasons that we have had here have been led by local kids. That's a true testament to what I believe builds a strong program. There's plenty of talent in the state of Utah and I want people to realize that."
Below is a look at each member of the signing class.
Sandi Bowles (Outfield/ Riverton, Utah/ Riverton HS/Utah Pegasus Travel Team)
Has Consistently hit over .450 during club career ... now plays for the Utah Pegasus Traveling team ... lettered all years at Riverton H.S. ... hit .495 with 49 hits and put together a 25-game hit streak during junior season ... played right field and threw out seven runners at first base ... helped Riverton finish third in state and was a first-team all-state and first-team all-region selection ... during her sophomore year, hit .457 with 34 hits and was a second-team all-region selection while helping Riverton finish fourth in state ... honor roll student who maintains a 3.8 GPA while taking Honors and AP classes.
Hogue on Bowles:
"Sandi is an outfielder who is a left-handed slap hitter. In a sense, she helped us replace what we lost in the graduating class of 2008. Sandi will bring much-needed speed and versatility to our offensive lineup. She plays the game with respect and a level of excitement that we hope will become contagious on our team."
Alyssa Garcia (Catcher/Houston, Texas/McArthur HS/ Texas Impact Gold Traveling Team)
Member of the MacArthur High School varsity softball team for four years ... Newcomer of the Year during freshman season ... First-Team All District catcher during sophomore and junior years ... currently a catcher/utility player for the Texas Impact Gold Traveling Team ... member of HOSA, National Technical Honors Society, and National Honors Society ... volunteers at community centers and schools to help students and community members.
Hogue on Garcia:
"Alyssa is a talented catcher out of Texas with a very lively arm. She has an extraordinary amount of raw talent that we hope to use to the fullest. After seeing her play in Colorado, we practically followed her home to Houston. She's a good fit for us in a number of ways. In addition to being a talented athlete, Alyssa is a great student who aspires to be a doctor."
Kelsi Hoopiana (Utility/Riverton, Utah/Riverton HS/Utah Pegasus Travel Team)
First-team all-state and 5A State All-Tournament team during sophomore and junior seasons ... hit .400 in five appearances at the ASA National Championships ... won five State Acceleration championships with the T-Birds ... had a two-run game in 2006 to help the T-Birds defeat the Devastation ... went 2-for-3 against the Chinese Olympic team last summer ... played with Victory USA last summer and hit over .400, striking out only five times ... has a 3.4 grade-point-average ... nickname is "Hoops."
Hogue on Hoopiana:
"Kelsi is the perfect utility-type of recruit. She can help our team in several different areas with her pure athleticism. She can play anywhere on the field and she outworks everyone around her, which is how she became the athlete she is today."
