FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The University of Utah softball team (23-22-1 overall, 3-10 Mountain West) took the field at Colorado State expecting to play a doubleheader today. But, after grabbing a 3-2, eight-inning win in game one, game two was cancelled due to weather.

Game two ended with Utah up 1-0 with the bases loaded and one out in the first. With the loss, CSU falls to 26-26 on the year. It is 5-8 in league action.

"Karina did a heck of a job for us, throwing a no-hitter into the fifth inning," said head coach Angie Jacobs. "We came out with a lot of energy today and we hit the ball well and pushed some runs across early in the game.

"But, Colorado State found some energy late in the game and tied it. Fortunately, Kara Foster hit a homer in the eighth to seal the win.

"We had a good effort today and we want to take that into the next two games against New Mexico."

A 2-0 Utah lead held for five innings before CSU rallied to knot it at 2-2 in the seventh. Ahsley Munoz' leadoff homer in the last frame made it 2-1 and a suicide-squeeze play later in the inning by Julia Kloppe tied it at 2-2.

However, the Utes stepped it up in the eighth, rallying behind the solo homer of Foster for the 3-2 win.

A pair of runs in each the first two innings made it 2-0 for the visiting Utes.

Meghan Crouse hit a leadoff triple in the first inning and scored on the very next at-bat. Kristie Keller hit a single to left to score Crouse. The second score came in the second inning when Staci Hemingway hit a homer over the center field fence. Utah led 2-0 after two.

Karina Cannon threw a solid six innings and held on in the seventh and eighth to improve to 7-8 on the year. She had a no-hitter through 4.1 innings. It was a one-out single to right by Kloppe in the fifth that broke up the no-no.

Cannon allowed two runs, three hits, three walks and fanned six batters. Only two runs were earned.

Ram hurler Kim Klabough (10-10) is tagged with the loss as the Utes hit six of her offerings this afternoon. Six different Utes each had a hit, led by the 1-for-3, one-run, one-RBI efforts of Hemingway and Foster.

Utah will play at New Mexico this Friday and Saturday for its final two road games of the regular season.
