SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah (25-25-1, 5-13 Mountain West) took a 5-2 lead into the sixth inning but saw UNLV plate four runs in that frame as the Rebels rallied for the 6-2 win here this afternoon.
The win ups UNLV's mark to 36-27 overall and to 11-8 in league action.
The Utes finished with 10 hits on the afternoon. Staci Hemingway led the way for the home team as she went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and a solo homer in the fifth. That's Hemingway's second straight 4-for-4 game, as she went 4-for-4 in the nightcap against San Diego State yesterday.
Hurler Meghan Dyer is tagged with the loss, falling 17-14 on the year.
A four-run sixth inning for the visitors pushed them into the lead for good. Jaci Hull led the inning off with a single and then stole second base. Brittany Bolinger plated her on a double to center field. The next three runs came off of Brittany Meade's homer to right-center field.
UNLV's first two scores came in the third on Hulls' two-run homer.
The four-run first inning for Utah was buoyed by a two-out, two-run home run by Kara Foster. Her towering shot over the fence in left-center field also scored Hemingway.
Meghan Crouse got the scoring started in the first frame. After Diana Phillips had a leadoff double, Crouse plated Phillips when she singled up the middle. The Utes' second run came when Andrea Hoffman grounded out to second with runners on second and third. Her effort plated Crouse.
Things didn't look good for UNLV starting pitcher Stephanie Bregante. Utah chased her off after only working for two-thirds of an inning. Bregante gave up four runs on four hits. However, Christie Robinson came in and held the Utes at bay and hurled the Rebels to victory. Her record ups to 14-5 on the year.
The same two teams will dual here at Ute Field tomorrow afternoon. UNLV and Utah take the field at 1 p.m.
