SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah softball team (22-20-1 overall) eked out a win in a pitchers' dual here this afternoon, topping Utah State, 1-0.
Utah State's (17-28) Jill Bruins had a no-hit bid through five innings, but Utah broke it up in the sixth. The Utes banged out both of their hits and plated the game's only run in the next-to-last frame.
Utah's Karina Cannon got the start, tossing for five innings. But, it was second baseman Kristie Keller that bagged the win. Keller shined in her first time in the circle this season, tallying her first-ever collegiate win. She hurled for two innings of work, allowing only two hits and fanning six batters.
Staci Hemingway was 0-for-2 at the plate but it was her sac fly in the sixth that was the difference. With the bases juiced, she hit a fly to center field. It was deep enough to score Kelly Matthews from third. Diana Phillips and Matthews had Utah's two hits.
Utah State finished the day with five hits as Amy Schaible led the team with a 2-for-3 outing. Bruins is tagged with the hard-luck loss.
Utah remains in the state for a pair of league games at Brigham Young this Friday and Saturday. Friday's game will air nationally on CSTV with first pitch in Provo, Utah, set for 7 p.m.
