FULLERTON, Calif. - The University of Utah softball team (17-8-1 overall) had the bases loaded in the sixth inning but couldn't convert as the No. 12-ranked Washington Huskies edged the Utes here, 3-1. The loss snaps the Utes' eight-game winning streak.
The Utes managed to load the bases with two outs in the next-to-last frame, but Husky pitcher Danielle Lawrie got Kelly Matthews to hit into a felder's choice that saw the shortstop opt to go home for the third and final out of the inning.
With the win, the Pac-10 rival improves to 22-7 for the year.
"We played the No. 12 team in the country and our bats came up a little short today," said head coach Angie Jacobs. "We weren't able to string hits together that put runs up on the board. That is exactly what Washington did and it was able to get the come-from-behind win against us. I think we played hard and we battled until the end and that's the type of attitude we need to take into tomorrow's game against Fullerton."
Utah finished with four hits on the day. Hailey Davenport led the offense, going 2-for-2 with a solo homer. Meghan Dyer got the start in the circle and went the distance. She falls to 12-5 on the year as she tossed a six-hit, eight-K effort today.
The Utes managed to get on the board first with Davenport's one-out, solo home run in the second. But, that lead didn't last for long as the Huskies responded with a pair of runs in the third.
It was Dena Tyson's two-RBI single to center that gave the Huskies the lead for good. Lauren Greer added insurance in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs on the board and a runner on second, she hit a shot that hugged the right field line. She legged out an RBI double that gave UW the 3-1 lead.
Danielle Lawrie gets the win, improving the 13-3 in the circle. Washington tagged Utah for six hits. Three Husky batters finished with two hits apiece.
The Utes return to action tomorrow here when Cal State Fullerton hosts a 6 p.m. (PDT) match-up.
