TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Utah softball team (10-7-1 overall) snapped its two-game losing streak with an 8-0, five-inning win over New Mexico State here in the Utes' second game of the USF Louisville Slugger Tournament this evening.
The Aggies fall to 13-5 on the season.
"We rebounded well from the game we played earlier in the afternoon," said head coach Angie Jacobs. "We were able to string back-to-back hits together in multiple innings and I feel that's something we haven't done very well in the past. This win will give us momentum going into the two tournament games tomorrow evening."
Pitcher Meghan Dyer tossed the team to victory in the nightcap. She improves to 8-4 in tossing a one-hit, 10-strikeout gem. Dyer walked only two Aggie batters.
Leading the Utes at the plate tonight was Kara Foster. She was 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Two of her RBI came from a homer to right in the first inning. Staci Hemingway was the only other Ute with multiple hits. She was 2-for-4 with a run scored. She hit her team-leading sixth double of the year.
It was a four-run third inning that spelled doom for the Aggies. A pair of RBI doubles did it for the Utes as Hailey Davenport had an RBI double down the left line to score Meghan Crouse. Andrea Hoffman had a two-RBI to right that plated Davenport and Kristie Keller. The fourth run of the inning came from Tori Medina's at bat. She was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Keller drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth to make it 7-0 and Crouse's RBI single in the fifth plated the game-ending eighth run.
Vanessa Fitzgerald takes the loss, falling to 5-1 on the year. The only hit that NMSU tallied off of Dyer came from the bat of Ashley Roszkos. She hit a lazy blooper to short left field in the fourth. Crouse dove for it and Roszkos legged out a double.
The Utes return to tourney action tomorrow when they play South Florida and Maryland. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. (EST).
