EL PASO, Texas - The University of Utah softball team (9-6-1 overall) began bracket play at the UTEP Invitational by topping Buffalo, 10-1 (5), but ended it with a loss to UTEP, 3-2 (8), in the title game here this afternoon.
The loss to UTEP snapped a six-game winning streak.
Kara Foster (3-for-5 with a home run), Meghan Crouse (4-for-7 with a run scored) and Hailey Davenport (3-for-6 with two RBI) led the Utes today.
Meghan Dyer got the nod in game one and pitched Utah to the nine-run, five-inning win. She only allowed one hit and fanned 13 of 17 batters faced. Karina Cannon started in the title game against UTEP. She went six innings, striking out eight. Cannon allowed two runs, only one of which was earned.
The Utes return to action this Friday when it plays at the Louisville Slugger USF Tournament.
Utah 10, Buffalo 1
The Utes plated five runs in the first and third innings to race past the University at Buffalo Bulls in their second meeting of the tournament. Utah beat UB in Saturday's nightcap, 9-5.
Crouse, Foster and Kristie Keller all had two hits against Bulls. In all, Utah tagged the Bulls for 10 hits. Foster led the offensive effort in going 2-for-2 with a two-RBI home run.
UTEP 3, Utah 2 (8)
Utah spotted the Miners a two-run lead and rallied in the last at bat to tie it. But, the Utes allowed the game-winning run in the eighth on a wild pitch that scored UTEP's Amber Bennett.
Stacie Townsend's solo homer in the second frame and a passed ball in fourth allowed UTEP to build a 2-0 lead. A UTEP error in the bottom of the fourth allowed Foster to score, cutting the lead in half. That lead held until the bottom of the seventh when a two-out RBI single by Davenport scored Phillips. That tied the game at 2-2.
Crouse and Davenport were both 2-for-4 to lead the Utes at the plate. Townsend led the UTEP effort with a 2-for-2 showing at the plate.
Kelly Curran got the win. She went all eight innings, allowing nine hits. She whiffed nine Ute batters.
