Softball Wins Fourth Straight

EL PASO, Texas - The University of Utah softball team (7-5-1 overall) won its fourth straight game, topping the University of Northern Colorado here on the second day of the UTEP Invitational, 8-0 (5).
Utah scored its eight runs on eight hits, belting three for extra bases. Hailey Davenport hit her second homer of the weekend, a two-out, two-run shot in the bottom of the second that also scored Meghan Crouse.
"Meghan Dyer pitched a shutout but it was a great team effort," said head coach Angie Jacobs. "Hailey Davenport hit a two-run home run. Kara Foster hit the ball well. Staci Hemingway hit the ball well.
"We're feeling really good, we're seeing the ball big and we're playing really well together. Now, the team is looking forward to taking that into tonight's game against Buffalo."
Seven of the nine Ute batters recorded a hit in the win over the Golden Bears. Diana Phillips had a good day at the plate. She was 1-for-1 with two RBI and also drew a pair of walks. Chalking up multiple hits today was Hailey Davenport. She was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a home run.
Dyer went all five innings and fanned 10 UNC batters. She only allowed four hits and didn't walk a single rival.
The Utes got all they needed in the first inning. Foster had a two-RBI single that scored both Crouse and Phillips. Each of them led the first frame off with walks.
The second inning saw a pair of two-RBI hits extend Utah's cushion. Phillips had a two-RBI double to plate Andrea Hoffman and Kelly Matthews. They reached base on an error and a single up the middle, respectively.
Crouse followed Phillips' at bat with a fielder's choice but would score on Davenport's home run on the ensuing play.
Four different UNC players went 1-for-2 at the plate today. Pitcher Hillarie VanOtterloo got the start for the Golden Bears and is tagged with loss.
The Utes return to the diamond tonight to play Mid-American Conference rival Buffalo. First pitch against the Bulls is set for 5 p.m. (MST).
