Softball to Celebrate 2006 Season

SALT LAKE CITY - On the heels of one of the most successful seasons in school history, the University of Utah softball team will take a couple moments this weekend to honor the 2006 squad that went 40-21, won the Mountain West Conference championship, and made it the NCAA Regional Final.
At halftime of the women's soccer match against Pepperdine on Friday, Sept. 29, Athletic Director Chris Hill and Associate Athletic Director Mary Bowman will award the softball team with its championship rings. The team will also be honored during the homecoming football game against Boise State this Saturday, Sept. 30.
After the ceremony, softball players and coaches will be available at the south entrance promenade to meet fans and sign autographs.
The Utes recorded a 40-21 record last year, marking only the sixth 40-win season in the program's 31-year history. They went 10-8 in league play and won the MWC tournament and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA's. Among the 40 wins was an impressive 3-2, eight-inning win over No. 9-ranked Michigan.
While the team rattled off impressive honors, so too did its players. Jackie Wong led the way in winning All-America, all-region and all-conference honors. She is the program's 11th All-American. She batted .439 for the year, the eighth-best average in the nation.
Also honored were Karina Cannon and Diana Phillips. They were both all-conference as Cannon racked up a 20-8 overall record in the circle. She went 8-3 in league play. Phillips won all-conference for the second time in her career. She hit .350 on the year and had on on-base percentage of .387. Both numbers were second best on the team to Wong.
