AUSTIN, Texas - The University of Utah softball team (40-21 overall) let the Cat out of the bag as Texas pitcher Cat Osterman whiffed 18 batters in leading the Longhorns (52-7 overall) to a 3-0 NCAA Regional Final win over Utah here at McCombs Field today.
Osterman, who led the 2004 Olympic squad to a Gold Medal in Athens, Greece, now leads the nation with nearly 16 strikeouts per game. Today, she fanned the first 14 Ute batters and saw her bid for a perfect game come to an end in the fifth when Staci Hemingway finally got a hold of one. Hemingway had a two-out single between third and short, into left field.
Osterman improves to 35-2 on the year. Utah only put the ball in play four times against Osterman. In addition to the one hit, Meghan Crouse grounded out to third in the sixth, Jessica Shiery popped to short in the seventh and Devina Quintero flied out to right in the seventh.
Utah's Meghan Dyer got the nod in the circle and falls to 16-9 on the year. She scattered seven Longhorn hits and struck out four batters. All three runs were earned.
Like the other three games in the NCAA Tournament, Utah's opponents were the first to score. The Utes spotted Texas a two-run lead in the second inning. Amber Hall hit an RBI double down the right-field line. It scored Megan Willis who led the inning off with a double of her own to left. Hall made it 2-0 when Jacqueline Williams' single to left scored her from third.
Texas made it 3-0 in the third when Hall hit her second RBI double of the game. This time, the shot to the gap in right-center field scored Tina Boutelle from second. Boutelle led the inning off with a bunt single.
Notes: The 40 wins are the most since Utah tallied 42 back in 2000 ... this was only the sixth 40-win season in school history ... Utah almost doubles its wins from 2005 when it went 21-29 ... the Utes finish the season making their 13th NCAA Tournament appearance, owning an all-time mark of 19-29 ... seniors Ivette Hernandez, Lindsie Nielsen and Jackie Wong each wrapped up their collegiate careers this afternoon.
