Softball Rallies from Two Runs Down in Victory

AUSTIN, Texas - Down two runs with only six outs left in an elimination game, that's when the University of Utah softball team (39-20 overall) came to life in the 3-2 victory over UTSA (37-14 overall) in the NCAA Regional here in Austin, Texas, this afternoon.
The Utes return to the field at 6 p.m. (CDT) tonight to play Indiana. The winner then goes on to play Texas on Sunday at 1 p.m. (CDT), while the loser goes home.
After tying the game in the sixth inning, Jackie Wong plated the game-winning RBI in the final at bat. Meghan Crouse led the seventh inning off with a triple to center field and Wong hit a lazy fly ball to left field, scoring Crouse.
Meghan Dyer got the win and improves to 15-8 on the year. She tossed all seven innings and fanned nine batters, allowing seven UTSA hits. Amanda Nikolenko took the loss for the Roadrunners.
It seemed like Utah was on the verge of bowing out of the double-elimination tourney as the Utes surrendered a pair of solo home runs in spotting the Roadrunners a 2-0 lead. That lead would hold until the bottom of the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth, Utah rallied to erase the deficit. Sharee Fonoti knocked Utah's goose egg off the board when she doubled off the fence in right field. It scored Devina Quintero who was on second. Utah tied it all up in the very next at bat when Staci Hemingway hit a ball to left field. The hit scored Fonoti, making it 2-2.
The Roadrunners lead the nation with 2.1 homers per game this year and used a pair of home runs to jump out on the Utes. Brittany Cantu and Amanda Horton hit their 13th and 19th homers of the year, respectively
The Roadrunners got on the board first, racing out to 1-0 lead in the second. Cantu hit a one-out solo shot, clearing the 212-foot marker in left-center field. Horton doubled the Roadrunner lead with a leadoff homer in the sixth.
