SALT LAKE CITY - Colorado State pitchers may need to be treated for whiplash as the University of Utah softball team (31-15, 10-4 Mountain West) smacked the ball all over the park today, bagging a pair of key conference wins, 7-3 and 11-6.
Utah tagged CSU's (25-23, 5-13) pitching staff for 33 hits today. The Utes scattered 15 offerings in game one and belted a season-high 18 hits in game two. On the flip side, the visiting Rams collected eight hits in each game.
The ball must have looked like a bowling ball to Jessica Shiery as she went 7-for-8 at the plate to lead the Utes. She tallied four RBI and three runs. Shiery also hit her team-leading ninth homer of the year. It was a two-run shot in the fifth inning of the second game. It capped off a six-run rally that not only allowed Utah to erase a 6-5 deficit, but it allowed it to take the commanding 11-6 lead.
Also of note were Diana Phillips' and Jackie Wong's hitting streak. The No. 1-2 hitters raced their hitting streaks to 16 and 13 games, respectively. Both are career highs.
Wong went 3-for-4 in game one and had only one hit in game two. But, the game-two hit was a bases-loaded doubled to right-center field that plated three runs, including the game-winner, for the home team. She finished the afternoon going 4-for-9 with four RBI and three runs.
Phillips turned it on in the nightcap as she went 3-for-4 in that game. She scored three runs on the day.
Karina Cannon shined for the Utes defensively. She got the start in game one and went the distance. She struck out a career-high nine batters in the 7-3 win. Cannon also came on in relief in game two to pick up the win. She improves to 16-5 on the year.
The Utes return to the diamond again on Sunday afternoon to host a single non-conference game with New Mexico State. It's senior day at Ute Field as first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
