LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The University of Utah softball team tried to overcome a seven-run deficit to Ohio State on Sunday, but its five-run, sixth-inning rally fell short as the Buckeyes held on for the 11-9 win over the Utes.
Down 11-2, the Utes (2-3 overall) exploded for seven runs between the fifth and sixth innings.
The Utes got the late-game rally started in the fifth inning with back-to-back home runs from Devina Quintero and Staci Hemingway. Those were the first home runs of the year for both Quintero and Hemingway and the first in Hemingway's career.
Ohio State (4-0) matched Utah's two-run, fifth-inning effort but the Buckeyes nearly let it slip away in the sixth.
Utah's rally continued into the sixth. With the bases loaded Quintero hit a two-run single to center that scored both Diana Philips and Meghan Crouse.
The Utes capitalized on one of OSU's four errors when Hemingway reached on a miscue, alloying Quintero and Ivette Hernandez to advance to second and third, respectively. Sharee Fonoti then narrowed the 11-6 deficit with another two-run RBI single to center, allowing Quintero and Hernandez to score.
Utah mustered one more run in the sixth when Hemingway scored on a wild pitch.
Quintero led the Ute offense on Sunday, going 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Hernandez was 2-for-3 with two runs while Crouse was 2-for-4 two runs.
Utah managed to grab the early lead on Quintero's RBI single in the top of first. Ohio State plated two in the bottom of the first and Utah tied it in the second on Phillips' RBI single to right.
OSU broke the tie with a four-run third inning and with three more runs in the fourth.
Meghan Dyer got the nod and takes the loss. She slips to 1-1. Dyer struck out five, walked four, and allowed six runs (four earned).
Utah returns to action on Friday, Feb. 17, when it plays in the Louisville Desert Classic on the campus of UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev.
