LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The University of Utah softball team spotted its opponents seven runs in the first two innings and couldn't overcome the deficit as Colorado State bagged the 7-3 victory in the first game of the Hilton Las Cruces Classic Friday morning.
While the two teams are both Mountain West Conference members, this was a non-league game.
The Rams (1-1 overall) belted out 13 hits in plating seven runs. Jessica Strickland tallied five RBI, thanks in part to a two-run home run in the first and a three-run homer in the second.
It was CSU's four-run second inning that led to Utah's demise. The lone highlight for Utah, which falls to 0-1 on the season, was a three-run, third-inning rally.
It was a pair of freshmen who stole the show in the third frame. Newcomer Andrea Hoffman got both the Utes and her collegiate career started. In her first collegiate at bat, she ripped her first career home run to make it 7-1. Not to be outdone, fellow rookie Jessica Shiery got her first tallies of the season too. She followed Diana Phillips' one-out triple with a two-out home run of her own.
Utah finished with seven hits in plating the three runs.
Ute Hurler Lindsie Nielsen takes the loss and falls to 0-1 on the season. In one and two-thirds innings of work, she walked four batters and allowed six earned runs. Sheri Shrock came on in relief in the second. She tossed for three and one-third innings, allowing one home run and an earned run. Karina Cannon came on in the seventh to retire the side in order.
Kim Klabough went the distance for CSU. She fanned two, allowed two home runs and three earned runs. She did not allow a single walk.
The Utes return to the diamond later today to play New Mexico State in the Hilton Las Cruces Classic. First pitch is slated for 4:30 p.m.
