PROVO, Utah - The University of Utah softball team raced out to a two-run lead but it wasn't enough as the ever-potent offense of Brigham Young rallied to down the Utes in game one of the Mountain West Conference doubleheader tonight, 7-2.
The Cougars scattered 10 hits in improving to 39-11 and a league-best 15-2. The Utes drop their second straight and are now 18-26 and 6-10 in loop action.
Lindsie Nielsen got the nod for the Utes and she falls to 8-13 for the year. She allowed seven runs, six earned, and struck out four while walking two. BYU's Summer Tobias (17-4) nabs the victory.
The Utes only tallied four hits, three of which came in the first two innings.
Utah's Meghan Crouse did extend her hitting streak to a career-best five games in going 1-for-2 at the plate. The only Ute to bag a pair of hits was Diana Phillips. She went 2-for-4. BYU had three players tally a pair hits, led by Debbie Dodds' 2-for-2 performance.
The Utes got the scoring started in the first inning. A walk and a single put Jackie Wong and Diana Phillips, the 1-2 batters on board. Devina Quintero then stepped in and singled to left. It was deep enough for both Wong and Phillips to score and to spot Utah a 2-0 lead.
Things started to go BYU's way in the bottom of the third. The Cougars plated seven unearned runs to rally for the 7-2 lead. A pair of home runs, including a grand slam homer by Ashlyn Russell in the third did the most damage. BYU led 6-2 after three and an RBI double in the fourth gave it the five-run cushion.
