SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 4-seeded University of Utah softball team advanced in the winners bracket of the Mountain West Conference Tournament with a 1-0 first-round win over the No. 5-seeded New Mexico Lobos here this afternoon.
Utah, winners of three of the last five MWC Tournaments, improves to 21-27 for the season. The Lobos fall to 15-33. The Utes return to the diamond to play the top-seeded Brigham Young Cougars today at 4:30 p.m. (PDT).
Lindsie Nielsen got tapped to take the circle for the Utes. She came out red-hot, retiring the first 14 batters. She didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning when Amy Ray hit a rocket down the left field line, off the glove of third baseman Devina Quintero.
The Utes only tallied three hits in the one-hour, nine-mintue win this afternoon. A hit each went to Ivette Hernandez (1-for-3), Bryanne Durrence and Lynsey Wall (1-for-2).
Katie Gregg took the loss for UNM. The Lobos tapped Nielsen for three hits, one each from three different players.
Utah hung the one and only run the board in the fourth inning. With pinch runner Sarah Lyman on first, Durrence hit a slow-roller to the short stop. Durrence legged out a single but a wild throw awarded Durrence second. Lyman, who was on her way to third, was awarded home on the errant toss.
The Lobos threatened in their half of the sixth. They had a runner in scoring position with one out and managed to load the sacks with two outs on the board. But, Nielsen pitched her way out of the debacle, forcing Lindsey Elcess to fly out to center field for the final out.
