PALO ALTO, Calif. - The University of Utah softball team snapped a three-game losing streak in topping the Princeton University Tigers here in Palo Alto, Calif., this afternoon, 3-2.
The Tigers (13-6) staged a two-run rally in the sixth but it wasn't enough as the Utes (9-13) were able to hold on for the one-run win.
Brianna Gourdin got the win in allowing four hits. She allowed two earned runs and struck out four Princeton batter in upping her record to 6-6. Kristen Schaus falls to 6-3 for the season.
Bryanne Durrence was the lone Ute to bag a pair of hits. She was 2-for-2 on the day with an RBI. Kate Nygaard and Diana Phillips were each 1-for-3 as well while Nygaard tallied the other RBI for Utah.
A pair of RBI singles in the first gave the Utes an early 2-0 lead. Kate Nygaard's one-out single to right scored leadoff hitter Jackie Wong and Bryanne Durrence bunt for a hit to score Diana Phillips.
The Utes hung what would become the game-winning run on the board in the fifth. A pair of back-to-back fielding errors on the same play allowed Wong to score from first, giving the Utes a 3-0 lead after five.
The Tigers awoke in the sixth to post two runs on the board. Erickson doubled to left field allowing Andras and Finley to score from the corners.
