Ute Softball Surges Past UVSC

ST. GEORGE, Utah - An explosive sixth inning and some help from the bats of a couple freshmen led the University of Utah softball team to its third straight win in topping Utah Valley State, 10-3.
Utah (3-0) plated seven runs in the sixth inning to surge past UVSC (0-4). Included in that outburst was a three-run shot over the fence by Lynsey Wall, a homerun and a two-RBI single by freshman Sharee Fonoti. Meghan Crouse also scored from third on a passed ball.
Fonoti and Wall were both 2-for-4 at the plate and each drove in three RBI and scored a run. Crouse was 2-for-2 with a sacrifice and freshman Diana Phillips went 2-for-3 with a sacrifice and a homerun. The homeruns for Fonoti and Phillips were career firsts.
Lindsie Nielsen got the win in upping her record to 2-0 for the season. She went three innings in giving up two earned runs. Samantha Schroeder got the start but did not get the decision. She threw for four innings, striking out four, walking four surrendering four hits.
Chelsey Mikalauski took the loss for UVSC. The freshman hurler struck out four Utah batters but surrendered eight runs, seven earned. Leading the Wolverines at the plate were Katie Welling and Amanda Kendzior. Both were 2-for-3 for the afternoon.
Ivette Hernandez got the scoring started with her first homerun of the season, a solo shot, in the fourth inning. But, UVSC rallied for three runs in its next at bat.
That was all the offense that the Woverines had in them as Utah would score nine unanswered runs the rest of the way, sparked by the two-run homer by Phillips in the fifth.
The Utes return to action next week when they play at Southern Utah on Thursday and at the Louisville Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev., over the weekend.
