Utah Softball Opens Seaosn With 8-0 Win Over UVSC

ST. GEORGE, Utah - Near perfection. That's the best way to describe Lindsie Nielsen's debut in a Utah uniform. The junior college transfer mowed down nine of 17 Utah Valley State batters in leading the University of Utah softball team (1-0) to a 9-0, five-inning win in its season opener here this afternoon.
Not only did she retire more than half of the Wolverine batters but Nielsen, who is 1-0 on the season, allowed only one hit and one walk for a total of two Wolverines base runners. The lone UVSC hit came in the fifth and final inning but Nielsen rallied to strike out the game's final three batters.
Offense was aplenty as seven of the nine Utes in the lineup got a hit. The final tally was 14 Utah hits as the team combined to bat .514. Jackie Wong led the way for Utah as the leadoff hitter went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Two of her three hits were doubles. Five other Utes bagged at least two hits in the first game of the day. Lines of note: Lynsey Wall went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and Devina Quintero was also 2-for-3 with two RBI.
The Utes got all the offense they needed in the opening frame, taking the early two-run lead. Leadoff batter Jackie Wong reached on a single to left and with some crafty base running, scored on a wild pitch. Devina Quintero plated the inning's second run when she too singled to left to bring Lynsey Wall home.
Utah would score in each of the five innings, posting multi-run innings with three in the second and two in the final frame.
Jackie Roberts took the loss for the Wolverines. She faced 31 Utah batters and scattered 14 hits. Roberts also had three strikeouts and three wild pitches.
Katie Welling had a sacrifice in the second and was 1-for-1 at the plate in tallying the lone UVSC hit.
