LAS VEGAS, Nev. - A pair of three-run home runs lifted the University of Utah softball team to a 9-1 win in five innings over California-Riverside in Utah's final game of the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic here in Las Vegas, Nev., this afternoon. The win snaps a two-game slide for the Utes.
Utah (5-2) trailed 1-0 after two innings but three-run shots by Ivette Hernandez in the third and Lynsey Wall in the fifth gave Utah an insurmountable 6-1 lead over the Highlanders.
Veteran hurler Brianna Gourdin (2-1) picks up the win in pitching all five innings. She struck out three, walked two and allowed only four hits on the afternoon.
Leading the way at the plate was Bryanne Durrence who went 3-for-3 and a run scored. Ivette Hernandez was 1-for-2 with three and two runs scored while Lynsey Wall was 1-for-3 with one run scored.
It took one swing of the bat for Utah to wrangle away UCR's one-run lead. In the top of the third, with two on, Ivette Hernandez parked a long-distance shot over the right field fence, giving the Utes a 3-1 lead.
Insurance runs followed in the fifth inning when Lynsey Wall hit a three-run homer followed by a two-run double by Sarah Lyman.
The Highlanders threatened in both the first and second innings, following through with the game's first score in the second. UCR had runners on the corners when a bloop single off of Kristen Dufrene's bat allowed Jessica Black to trot home from third to make it 1-0.
The Utes return to action next weekend at the Campbell/Cartier Tournament in San Diego.
