LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The University of Utah softball team dropped its second straight game this afternoon, falling to No. 8-ranked Michigan here at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev., this morning, 7-1.
The Utes (4-2) tallied five hits and left five runners stranded in taking the loss. Michigan (3-0) scattered 12 hits.
Lindsie Nielsen takes the loss for Utah in allowing five earned runs and fanning three. She went four innings. Samantha Schroeder came on in the fifth to finish out the game. Nicole Motycka picked up the win for Michigan.
Freshman Diana Phillips was the lone Ute to bag multiple hits. She was 2-for-2 with a walk.
Utah got on the board in the top of the fifth when Meghan Crouse scored on a Michigan error. However, the Maize and Blue responded in the bottom of five with three runs of its own to make it 7-1.
Michigan tallied two runs in each the first and third innings, only two of which were earned. The first two runs in the first inning scored were on an error while Stephanie Findlay's two-run home run in the fourth doubled the Wolverine lead.
Utah will finish tournament play in Las Vegas with a 12:30 p.m., game against Cal-Riverside. Action continues next weekend when the Utes head to San Diego, Calif., to play in the Campbell/Cartier Tournament hosted by San Diego State University.
