SALT LAKE CITY--The Utah softball team made up for its lack of offense in the first three innings, by producing an eight-run fourth to grab an 8-0 victory over UVSC on Tuesday afternoon at Ute Field. The victory improves Utah's overall record to 17-26, while the Wolverines fall to 18-16 on the season.
Brianna Gourdin starred on the mound for Utah in the win. The hurler allowed just three hits in five innings of work, while striking out five. The effort earned Gourdin her 13th win of the season.
"I really felt like my pitches were crisp today and that I had good command. I also had a lot of ball movement," said Gourdin.
The loss went to Kelli Smith, who allowed seven earned runs and five hits in one and one-third innings of work.
Utah began the fourth with a leadoff walk by Melissa Stahnke, who would then score on a double to left center by Devina Quintero. Quintero would then cross the plate off a monstrous home run by Kate Nygaard to put Utah up 3-0. After Utah loaded the bases, Bryanne Durrence laced a bases clearing double to left center to put Utah up 6-0. The final two runs came off a long ball by Ute shortstop Glennis Donnelly.
"I think sometimes it just takes us awhile to get going offensively," noted Durrence. "We had yesterday off, but we finally came around and put up a big inning. I just saw my pitch and drove it."
