SALT LAKE CITY--The Utah softball team grabbed an 11-10 victory over in-state rival Brigham Young at Ute Field on Saturday. The two teams put on an offensive showcase in the game, with Utah coming out with the win in the end. The win moves the Utes to 16-26 overall 5-6 in league play, while BYU falls to 27-15 overall and 4-6 in conference play.

The Utes were the first Utah team to put a run on the board after Melissa Stahnke singled in Jackie Wong in the bottom of the first. BYU would answer in the top of the second with three runs to take a 3-1 lead. But it was a game of one-upping the other as Utah pounded out six runs in the latter of the inning. Three of the six runs came off a home run by Glennis Donnelly to center field.

The Utes added another run in the third to stretch the lead to 8-3. BYU refused to die scoring three in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth to take a 9-8 lead. Then, in the bottom of the seventh, Ivette Hernandez would rip a home run to left to tie up the game at nine-all and force extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, BYU used three hits to bring in a run and once again take the lead--this time at 10-9. In the latter of the inning, Utah's first batters were retired. The next hitter, Stahnke, would draw a walk before crossing the plate on a walk-off home run by Devina Quintero.

Utah's Brianna Gourdin picks up the win to move to 12-5 on the year. Gourdin allowed 18 hits and 10 runs in the game, six of which were earned. She did strike out five in the win. Brooke Boyce started the game for BYU, but was chased after one and two-third innings of work. Boyce allowed six runs off five hits. Reliever Niki Andersen picks up the loss for BYU to fall to 14-6. Andersen allowed five runs, four of which were earned, including the game-winning home run by Quintero.

Leading Utah at the plate were Stahnke and Hernandez, who both knocked three hits while driving in one and scoring two. Quintero and Kate Nygaard each had two hits, while Donnelly had the three-run shot.
