Utah Softball Adds Power With a Pair of Signees

SALT LAKE CITY - Two dynamic hitters have signed national letters of intent to join the University of Utah softball team next fall.
Veteran head coach Mona Stevens has announced the addition of high school standouts Hailey Davenport (West Jordan/Bingham HS) and Jessica Shiery (Windsor, Calif./Windsor HS) to the softball roster for the 2006 season.
"The goal of this class was to increase our team's slugging percentage," said head coach Mona Stevens. "We are excited to sign accomplished hitters like Hailey and Jessica and feel that we addressed our immediate needs with these student-athletes."
A three-year letterwinner and team MVP, Davenport has won first-team all-state laurels in each of her three seasons and was the region MVP last year. Splitting time at third base and catcher, she has been a three-time first-team all-region player and has been named to the state all-tournament first team two times. Davenport currently owns Bingham High records for homeruns in a game (two), season marks for homeruns (nine) and RBIs (41), and career records for homeruns (14) and grand slams (one). BHS has finished second or better in the region the last three years, taking first last season en route to a second-place showing in the state tournament.
"Hailey is one of the best hitters to come out of the state with this graduating class," commented Stevens. "She swings for power and has a lot of potential. We are excited to get her up here to see what she can do against Division I pitchers. We're not sure where she will play on defense but we are going to make room for her bat in our lineup."
Shiery was one of the top hitters in California as a junior. She ranked first on MaxPrep Poll in slugging percentage and was among the top hitters in her conference. Shiery was second in batting average (which ranked 27th in the state), slugging percentage and on-base percentage. She is a two-time first-team all-league and All-Empire player as well as a two-time team MVP. Shiery, who has played catcher, outfield and at the corners, has won numerous long-ball contests and played ASA softball with the San Jose Strikkers last year.
"Jessica is a proven hitter, having faced some of the top pitchers in the country throughout her high school career," Stevens noted. "She has one of the top batting averages, on-base percentages and slugging percentages in the state of California and we're excited to have her join our program."
