The Utes opened their fall ball season last weekend at the Fall Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash. Utah dropped two games to Nebraska and Washington, both top-15 teams from last year, but grabbed a win against Seattle in the tourney. "I am very pleased with the effort we had in Washington. We played very aggressive and did well despite being short-handed on the mound," said Head Coach Mona Stevens.
During the Classic, Utah really only had one pitcher available in Jen Pursell. But, even Pursell is recovering from summer knee surgery. Freshman Brianna Gordin threw some innings in Seattle, but was just cleared to play earlier in the week after battling Mononucleosis. Junior Heather Bowlin is still recovering from shoulder surgery and won't be available until the spring season.
Utah heads to Las Vegas, Nev., this Saturday and Sunday to compete in the UNLV Fall Classic. The Utes will face Loyola Marymount and Long Beach Community College. "We are still a little behind in our pitching, but our defense and offense are playing well. We need to stay consistent this weekend, with our goal being to see what we are capable of and then maintaining that level of play."
On Sept. 27-28, Utah will host its own fall tournament. Brigham Young, Southern Utah and Utah State will all visit Ute field. This will conclude the fall ball season for Utah.
