The University of Utah softball team lost to the Mississippi State Bulldogs, 11-3 in six innings on Fri., May 19, at the NCAA Regional Tournament in Seattle, Wash. Utah moves to 40-22 overall. The Bulldogs are currently 44-25 overall.
Utah seemed to have the momentum, scoring in the top of the first inning. It wasn't until the bottom of the fifth when Utah committed a couple of costly errors and Mississippi State scored eight runs on only three hits. Utah came back in the top of the sixth inning to score their last two runs of the game. In the bottom of the sixth, Mississippi State scored three more runs to end the game.
For the Utes, Senior Sunny Smith went 2-for-3 with a double, one run and one RBI. Lyndsey Trevis went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Teammate Lisa Hashimoto-Hall went 2-for-3 with a double and one run. Kristin Arbogast took the loss for Utah, pitching 5.2 innings, giving up nine hits, seven earned runs, seven walks and struck out three. Arbogast is currently 38-18 overall.
For the Bulldogs, Keri McCallum went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and one RBI. Kasey Whitehead went 1-for-3 with a run and three RBI. A.J. Lott was a perfect 1-for-1 with two RBI. Jennifer Pursell recorded the win for Mississippi State, pitching 1.1 innings, giving up two hits and one earned run. She is now 26-15 overall.
"Up until the bottom of the fifth inning, we were in control of the ballgame and had the momentum on our side. We made a couple of errors and then the momentum started to shift and they started scoring runs. Every team that is here deserves to be here and we've got to put this one behind us and be ready to play tomorrow," said Utah Head Coach Mona Stevens.
Coming Up:
The Utes will face Tennessee-Chattanooga in game eight on Sat., May 20, at 12:30 p.m. (PST). Utah will be competing for a spot in the NCAA College World Series that will be held May 24-29 in Oklahoma City, Okla.
