Salt Lake City - The University of Utah women's softball team opened its fall season with a 6-3 win over in-state rival Utah State on Sept. 30. Senior Amberly Jeppson scored three runs in the opener. Utah won seven out of 11 games in the fall competition and claimed wins over national powerhouses Washington and Nebraska.
Utah's 7-4 (.636) fall record was an inspiring start. Utah tallied other wins over Loyola-Marymount and MWC opponent UNLV. Veteran outfielder, Amberly Jeppson racked up 13 hits and 10 runs in the fall, while teammate Niki Hayhurst notched 12 hits and 12 RBI. Molly McLean added 12 hits and nine runs throughout the fall. Senior Kristin Arbogast tallied five wins and 31 strikeouts and freshman Heather Bowlin posted two wins and 18 strikeouts during the fall season.
"Playing in the fall is always a huge advantage for us," said Head Coach Mona Stevens. "If you do well during the fall, you build your confidence going into the regular-season. If you don't do well, it motivates you even more. It let's you know you've got your work cut out for you and you have to get after it. For us this fall, it did both. We lost a couple of games that we shouldn't have lost, but we also beat some top teams as well. We defeated Washington and we defeated them soundly, there was no question about that win. We also beat Nebraska soundly. All in all, the fall season gave our kids a very positive outlook and showed the potential they have for the spring."
