UTAH/COLORADO STATE SERIES RESCHEDULED: Due to the spring snowstorm that blanketed the Wasatch Front last week, Utah's home-opening series with Colorado State scheduled for Friday and Saturday was postponed. The three-game series has been rescheduled with a doubleheader on April 20 at 1:00 p.m. and a single game on April 21 at 2:00 p.m.
UTAH UPDATE: The Utes, winners of four straight, are 16-16 overall and in fifth place in the Western Athletic Conference with a 3-3 record. Utah was able to play just one game last week due to inclement weather. The Utes took the first game of a scheduled doubleheader at Southern Utah last Wednesday, winning 5-4 in five innings. The second game was cancelled because of snow flurries.
Utah has competed in four tournaments. Utah went 2-3, facing four Top 25 teams, at Arizona State's Fiesta Bowl Tournament, Feb. 12-14 in Tempe, Ariz. Utah tied for third place, posting a 3-3 record at the New Mexico State's Troy Cox Softball Classic, Feb. 26-28. During its Spring Break trip, Utah finished third at San Jose State's NIST Tournament, March 12-14. The Utes lost all four games at the Kia Klassic, March 18-20 in Fullerton, Calif. To open the WAC season, the Utes lost all-three games of the series at San Diego State, March 6-7.
Freshman outfielder Molly McLean and junior catcher Sunny Smith lead the team in hitting (.323). Smith also has a team-best 11 doubles and shares the team lead in home runs with Sarah Farnworth, each with and four. Junior outfielder Jenny Monson has a team-best 15 RBI, as well as three home runs. McLean and junior outfielder Lisa Hashimoto both have a team-best 10 stolen bases. Sarah Farnworth leads the pitching staff with a 1.92 ERA and a 9-7 record. She also has a 3-to-1 strikeouts to walks ratio.
NEXT WEEK: The Utes continue an 11-game homestand, hosting a doubleheader against Southern Utah and three-game series against Hawai'i. The Utes host the Thunderbirds on Wednesday (April 14) 1:30 p.m. Utah and the Rainbow Wahine play a single game on Friday (April 16) at 3:00 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday (April 17) at 1:30 p.m.

Outfielder Tammy Alcantar leads the team in hitting with a .402 average and also has 14 RBI. First baseman Sandy Millard leads the team with 22 RBI and seven home runs, and also has a .361 batting average. Kelly Martin leads the pitching staff with a 5-14 record and a 3.26 ERA. LAST WEEK: Sarah Farnworth hit a three-run shot in the top of the third and got the victory on the mound as Utah defeated Southern Utah 5-4 on Wednesday in a game called after five innings because of snow flurries. Game two of the doubleheader was canceled.
Farnworth broke a scoreless tie with her fourth home run of the season to left field that brought in Stacy O'Farrell and Sunny Smith with two outs. After Southern Utah got a run in the bottom of the third and Utah answered with another run in the top of the fourth, the Thunderbirds rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth off of three hits and two Ute errors.
Farnworth improved to 10-7 with the win. She gave up three earned runs off eight hits, struck out six and walked two in five innings. Jennie Kerr took the loss for SUU to fall to 2-17. Both teams got eight hits and committed two errors. Lyndsey Trevis went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Utes.

Stevens owns an 96-55 overall record and a 44-26 mark against Western Athletic Conference teams. In her first season, Stevens led Utah to the NCAA Tournament and a third-place finish in the WAC. Last year, Stevens guided a Utah team that started seven freshmen to a 36-21 overall record and a third-place finish in the WAC at 19-13. Stevens hasn't slowed down during the off-season. Last fall, she was named head coach of the USA Softball Junior National Team that will compete in the 1999 World Games in Taipei, Taiwan, June 17-27.
The former Ute player and assistant coach came home in September of 1996 following a two-year stint at the University of Massachusetts. Stevens was the associate head coach for the Minutewomen during the 1995 and 96 seasons, and was named UMass' head coach in June of 96, three months prior to being hired by her alma mater. In each of her two seasons at UMass, Stevens helped the Minutewomen reach the NCAA Tournament and win the Atlantic-10 Conference regular-season and tournament championships.
Stevens began her coaching career as an assistant at Utah from 1981-84. In addition to her collegiate coaching portfolio, Stevens has been a nationally recognized pitching instructor over the past 14 years. She has also worked internationally, and was the owner of Mona Stevens Enterprises from 1989-99.
QUOTING STEVENS: On the loss of games last week - "It's always amazing the kind of weather that we have here in April. It was April 1st, and it was more than just a joke for April Fool's Day. We had 17 inches of snow, the largest snowfall we've had all winter. We've had 70 degree weather the last two weeks, and then the week that we're supposed to open up at home it's in the 40s. Fortunately, we were able to reschedule the Colorado State series and we didn't lose any games in the conference. We had bad weather at Southern Utah also, playing the last two innings of a five-inning game in the snow. But, the timing was good in a way because we have nagging injuries that needed the extra time off."
On this week's games - "The weather for our game at Utah State looks iffy, but I hope we can get those games in because we need to play. Utah State's record isn't great, but they hit the ball well. Pam McCreesh has done a great job up there. They will be a tough team to beat, and those in-state games are always tough because nobody wants to lose to the other school. We have a huge weekend coming up with New Mexico. They're ranked second in the region and are playing very well. They've already gotten some key wins and I'd have to say they're the most improved team in the WAC. They are free swingers and they score a lot of runs. If we can take two of three from them, that would put us in a good spot in the conference and in the region. We have some big games coming up here at home, and now that we're playing at home we need to create a home field advantage. We need to get some support from our fans."
Looking ahead - "With New Mexico, Hawai'i, Colorado State and Fresno State coming to our place, we have the chance to make some things happen for us at home. If we can take two of three from everyone and then head into the Fresno State series on a roll, we can put ourselves in a good situation. And, we're playing well enough right now that we can do that. The sentiment of the team is that the second half of the season is going to be much better than the first half. We're playing with some confidence now. We're swinging the bats with a lot more confidence; and because we're hitting the ball much better, we've taken some of the pressure off our pitching staff and defense. Our pitching staff has been much improved recently and our infield is also looking more solid."
WAC PRE-SEASON POLL: Utah was picked to finish third in the Western Athletic Conference softball race this season in a poll of the league's coaches. The Utes received 52 points in the voting.
